Queer Arts & Heritage Project

CELEBRATING OUR PAST, CREATING OUR FUTURE!

Our history-focused art project aiming to explore and promote the rich heritage of the LGBTQIA+ community through free to attend queer focused art workshops, exhibitions, and research!

ABOUT

Fancy joining us for an inclusive, fun, and maybe messy couple of hours?! Each event is completely free to attend and includes all of the resources and knowledge you’ll need! The event is open to LGBTQ+ people aged from 16 and upwards but we primarily focus on people over 18! We can welcome a limited number of under 16s if they bring along an adult.

Being creative is considered to be a leading form of mindfulness and is a great way to improve your general well-being. We combine this fantastic skill with LGBTQ+ identities to provide a safe space to allow you to explore and express your identity in a supportive environment.

In previous workshops, we’ve focused on different media such as making collages and painting! For every workshop, we will welcome an LGBTQ+ creative to come along and talk about, demonstrate, and provide the equipment, for you to give it a shot!

So that you can rest assured that you’ll have the best time, we work with the creatives to develop their session plans and support them to make sure everyone can get involved in the activities provided. Usually, everyone leaves with a little something that they’ve put together during the session so you might even end up with a brand-new canvas to display!

These spaces also look at authentic expression so you can find different ways to explore and display how you are feeling. Perhaps a moody or colourful painting, using different stitching, or just getting messy! You can use the art and education to explore you in whatever way you’d like.

What To Expect

Here’s just a smaller taster of what we have to come.

What Are We Doing?

2023 signified the 20th anniversary of the repeal of Section 28, a dark chapter in LGBTQIA+ history that silenced our community’s voices and experiences and made education around LGBTQIA+ heritage, community, and stories illegal. However, even two decades later, our heritage, arts, and literature remain glaringly absent from educational curricula, leaving generations unaware of their own heritage, culture, and stories. In the present day, the landscape is far from welcoming for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Hate crimes targeting transgender people have alarmingly surged, and the UK’s ranking on ILGA Europe’s list of LGBTQ+ inclusive countries has significantly dropped from 1st in 2015 to 17th.

Now, more than ever, we need to act swiftly and decisively to counteract the rising hostility and promote understanding, compassion, and acceptance. Through this project, we aim to educate each other about our rich history, the remarkable artists who shaped it, and the triumphs over discrimination. By coming together, we can inspire future change-makers and foster a sense of empowerment, showcasing the resilience and strength of our community in the face of adversity.
