Blossom LGBT CIC is delighted to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Postcode Society Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The grant will be used to establish a much-needed wellbeing focused alcohol-free evening social space for LGBTQ+ young adults in Woking. The weekly Tuesday night gatherings aim to combat loneliness, enhance mental health, and foster a sense of community among the LGBTQ+ young adults.

Recent studies have highlighted the urgent need for such a safe and supportive space. LGBTHero’s research revealed that a staggering 56% of LGBTQ+ individuals experience frequent loneliness, which significantly elevates the risk of mental health challenges, reduced self-esteem, and risky decision-making. Additionally, Transactual’s findings showed that 85% of trans women have been victims of transphobic street harassment.

“This project matters immensely in these increasingly challenging times,” said Oscar Hoyle, CEO of Blossom LGBT CIC. “People need the skills to cope, and we aim to provide our community with the tools to manage their wellbeing and reduce the mental health impacts caused by isolation and discrimination. Blossom LGBT CIC is proud to offer this essential space, catering to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and we’re so pleased that the Players of the Postcode Lottery and the Postcode Society Trust see the value of our project and have decided to support us”.

Blossom LGBT CIC is committed to addressing the critical issue of loneliness and mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young adults in Woking and across Surrey. The weekly alcohol- free social space will serve as a haven, fostering connections and providing support to help members cope with the difficulties of the social environment. Additionally, the project will enable the organisation to offer suitable referrals to LGBTQ+ inclusive experts, further enhancing the support network available to the community.

The funding grant from Postcode Society Trust will also contribute to enhancing the governance, volunteering processes, and overall capacity of Blossom LGBT CIC’s social spaces, enabling the organisation to extend its reach and impact within the community. Blossom LGBT CIC is “excited to spend time further developing our intersectional approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion and are committed to becoming a sector leaders in delivering race equitable, accessible, and all round inclusive LGBTQ+ spaces.”
