LOOKING AFTER OUR TEAM: Our fundraiser for for a multi-use space.

We want to chat with you about something near and dear to our hearts – our current fundraiser to create a multifunctional space for our team and the wider community. 


So, what’s the big deal with this space, you ask? Well, whilst our fundraiser page (found here!) goes into detail about the benefits to the LGBTQIA+ community, we think it’s really important to talk a little about our team.  


Whenever people get involved in a non profit, it’s never going to be for the amazing salary, the work life balance, or the benefits. Nine out of ten times people take volunteer or paid positions within non profits because they are passionate about the cause. In our work, over 90% of our team members identify within the LGBTQIA+ community and the rest have very close relationships with people who are. This puts them at significant risk of vicarious (not bicurious!) trauma and burn out. 


What is Vicarious Trauma? 

Well, in simple terms it’s when someone who offers empathetic support to others takes on a level of emotional exhaustion resulting in feelings of trauma. Vicarious trauma is more likely to impact a person who has a shared or similar lived experience.The results of this can be really hard for a person the manage and will more often than not require time off work, mental health support, and sometimes even a need to find new line of work.  

We know that time and time again non profits are criticised for not taking the risk of vicarious trauma seriously enough, or generally not supporting their employees, which is why we’re working hard to put a growing level of support in place. 

So how does an office come into this? 
Whilst our office will be a hub for our community, hosting podcasts, webinars, mentoring, and far more, we think the benefits that’ll support our teams wellbeing really can’t be overlooked!  

Connection is Key 🌈

 Our team, like many of you, know the importance of community and connection. Having a physical space will create an opportunity for our team to connect on a deeper level. It’s a space where they can swap stories, share experiences, and lean on each other for support. After all, who understands what it’s like to be making a difference better than someone who’s also making a difference?


Letting It Out 🌪️

 We all need a place to vent, right? Our team works tirelessly to empower our young adults, and the emotional weight of the job can take its toll. Having a dedicated space means that our volunteers can let off steam, share their struggles, and just be themselves. Sometimes, a good old moan with colleagues who truly get it is the best therapy.


Collaborative Vibes 🤝

The magic of this space goes beyond just an office. It’s also a webinar hub, mentoring haven, digital workshop wonderland, and a consultancy spot. Having a physical location for these activities means we can bring in more experts, host training sessions, and collaborate more efficiently. The result? Even more knowledge, skills, and resources to support our community.

Our volunteers and paid employees are the heartbeat of our organisation, and a happy, connected, and supported team is crucial to our ability to empower LGBT young adults.
